Jishan Traditional Chinese Medicine: A New Concept in Weight Loss Through Tonification
With the holiday season approaching, year-end gatherings and festive meals are becoming more frequent. As the weather turns colder, people often find themselves eating more without even realizing it. This raises an important question: how can we lose weight in a healthy way?
For high-stress engineers, teenagers who spend long hours playing video games, and busy homemakers caring for both children and elderly parents, avoiding excessive weight gain can be especially challenging.
To address this concern, Dr. Xiuzhen Fan and Dr. Jinghuang Liang of Jishan Traditional Chinese Medicine are introducing a new Bay Area wellness concept based on Traditional Chinese Medicine’s principle of syndrome differentiation and treatment: weight loss through tonification.
Why Weight Management Matters
Obesity can contribute to a wide range of health problems, including:
-
Fatty liver disease
-
Hyperlipidemia
-
Atherosclerosis
-
Obesity-related cancers
Over the years, the medical community has developed many different methods and medications for weight loss. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses.
-
Some deliver quick results but come with significant side effects
-
Others are costly
-
Some may lack a holistic, whole-body approach
New Weight-Loss Medications and Debate
Recent reports indicate that Contrave is the third new weight-loss medication this year to be reviewed by U.S. regulators.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had already rejected two other drugs in October. Contrave met the FDA’s required efficacy benchmark, with at least 35% of trial participants losing at least 5% of their body weight.
Although the FDA advisory panel considered Contrave’s weight-loss results to be moderate, some experts argued that rejecting the drug would discourage further development of obesity treatments—especially when one-third of Americans are affected by obesity, one of the nation’s most serious health concerns.
On the 7th, the panel voted 13 to 7 in support of approval.
The Tonification-Based TCM Approach
Unlike conventional Traditional Chinese Medicine approaches, this slimming method emphasizes tonification instead of purgation.
The underlying principle is to:
-
Strengthen the spleen and stomach’s transformative and transportive functions
-
Support respiratory metabolism
-
Convert excess caloric intake into substances essential for the body
-
Reduce the formation of elevated blood lipids
-
Assist in the removal of harmful toxins
Guided by the Five Elements theory and the regulation of the five zang organs, this tonification-based method promotes fat metabolism to achieve:
-
Lipid reduction
-
Fat elimination
-
Healthy weight loss
The herbal remedies used in this approach:
-
Do not cause diuresis
-
Do not cause diarrhea
-
Help preserve the body’s internal balance and stability
-
Require no special increase in exercise
